Vila do Corvo

Corvo Island

Localization

Situated at 31º 05'W and 39º 40'N, with an area of 17,2 km2 (6,5 km x 4 km), Corvo Island (the smallest of the Archipelago), together with Flores, forms the Ocidental group of Azores.

History

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between the European and American continents, we find the Black Island or Marco Island: the smallest in the Azores archipelago. It was discovered in 1452 by Diogo de Teive - the first person to arrive in the Azores 30 years before.

This island consists of a central volcano with a crater about 5 km in diameter and 300 m deep, and is situated at sea level. By the crater we also find the highest point of the island, known as Estreitinho, which is 720 m high.

Europe’s western-most island has approximately 430 inhabitants. Although the population reached over 1000 in 1864, this declined significantly at the beginning of the 20th century, when nearly 330 inhabitants immigrated to the United States.

The population gathers together by the seaside in just one settlement, Vila do Corvo (Town of Corvo). Known until 1832 as ‘The Village of Our Lady of the Miracles’ (Patron Saint of the village), Corvo changed its name after being ´promoted´ to Vila (small town), and was permitted to have an independent City Council.

People in Corvo work mainly on agricultural activities developed on the land situated around the village. Something remarkable and curious: the island has more than 1,000 bovine cattle individuals and more than half of these belong to the local breed population!
